A SHEFFIELD headteacher at the centre of the controversial merger between Myers Grove and Wisewood schools has resigned.
John Wilkinson, head at Myers for four years, had been a strong supporter of plans to create a new school on the Myers' Stannington site.
He was also a key member of the parents' proposing group - an official body set up to steer the merger throug
h before the opening of the new school in 2011.
An Ofsted report on Myers published towards the end of term gave the school an official notice to improve – giving ammunition to Wisewood campaigners who said their successful school was being forced to merge with an underperforming one.
An interim head, Andy Ireland, will take over from September working under the overall leadership of Wisewood head Diane McKinlay.
A city council spokeswoman said: "John Wilkinson has resigned from his post as headteacher at Myers Grove School to pursue other career opportunities."
