ORGANISERS of the 178th Bakewell Show were on course yesterday for a bumper turnout, benefiting from what they believe to be a stay-at-home summer because of the economic gloom.

As the event went into its second day predictions of poor weather were failing to materialise and first aid staff were even urging visitors to drink more water because of the heat.

It looks as though the attendance over Wednesday and Thursday will be roughly in line with last year's at around 65,000.

For the first time the showground opened on Tuesday afternoon for the qualifiers for the Horse of the Year. It proved a popular move, likely to be repeated next year, although an admission charge may be introduced.
