ALL 20,000 students at the University of Sheffield have been sent letters spelling out the importance of good behaviour in the local community.
The joint letter from the Vice-Chancellor and the Union of Student referred to the front page article in last week's Sheffield Telegraph in which residents complained about late night rowdiness and mess during freshers' week.
The university has apologised for the behaviour of a minority of students, and says it is working hard to tackle the problems.
Prof Dominic Shellard, in charge of external affairs, has visited to households on both sides of the neighbourhood divide in a bid to smooth the way for better relations.
Police are optimistic that normality has resumed, and that neighbourhood policing will keep it that way, but one resident reported this week being woken at 3am by a student addressing the street through an electronic megaphone.
