THE air ambulance came in to land by the side of the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire after a two-car collision.

Medics landed on the southbound stretch near junction 37 at Dodworth, after a crash involving a silver Mazda 323 Sport and a lorry.

They treated the Mazda driver, a man from Loughborough, at the scene after he suffered a broken ankle in the collision.

He was airlifted to hospital for further treatment.

The lorry driver escaped unhurt from the crash at about 5.20pm on Wednesday.

Police officers were also called to the scene to deal with the aftermath of the collision and to help deal with congestion on the motorway.

Motorists reported huge queues developing on both sides of the motorway while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police examined the crash scene as they tried to establish what led to the collision.
