AN INAUGURAL mountain bike race in Greno Woods took off in spectacular fashion.
About 170 riders took part in the competition, raising the profile of the woods and money for Sheffield Wildlife Trust in the process.
The trust has launched a £1m appeal to buy the woodland, near Grenoside, so it can be managed for the benefit of wildlife, walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and horse riders.
Sheffield’s world champion mountain biker Steve Peat helped to organise the Steel City Series. Roy Mosley, the trust’s head of land management, said: “We didn’t know how it would go and the turnout was great. As well as the interest from bikers, there were a lot of people who turned up to watch.”
