Approval for more Sheffield 20 mph zone plans

Safety: Three extra 20 mph zones have been approved for Sheffield neighbourhoods

PLANS have been approved for 20mph zones in three Sheffield residential areas.

Members of Sheffield Council’s cabinet highways committee have backed schemes in Parson Cross, Upperthorpe and High Green.

The Upperthorpe zone, which was proposed by the council’s central community assembly, will include Upperthorpe and the neighbouring Birkendale and Roebuck Road areas.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, whose ward includes part of Upperthorpe, welcomed the decision – but called on the council to go further.

The Liberal Democrat said: “I’m glad the council have approved these new road safety measures – 20mph zones have been proven to reduce accidents in residential areas and I’m pleased the local community has forced the council to act.

“However, I’d still like to see the council go further by expanding the scheme across Crookesmoor.”

The other 20mph zones approved are in Parson Cross west of Lindsay Avenue, plus streets north of Wortley Road, High Green.

Households had been sent publicity about the new speed limits and just a handful objected.

The schemes are supported by South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.

The council said it intends to extend 20mph zones across all residential areas of the city – although zones will not have ‘physical’ traffic calming measures such as road humps.

The committee also approved legal orders for ‘keep clear’ markings outside 17 schools, so the restrictions can be enforced.

And a £500,000 plan to finally install pedestrian crossings in Broomhill at the junction of Whitham Road, Fulwood Road, Crookes Road and Nile Street was also approved.
