SUPERMARKET giant Asda wants to open a new store in the south east of the city.
In the latest jostling for business by the superstores, a potential location off Waterthorpe Greenway and Beighton Road East, near Drakehouse Retail Park, has been identified.
Plans have been submitted to redevelop the site of the business, Home Decor Innovations, which is aiming to relocate.
Asda says the store would offer up to 450 jobs and, it is argued, would make the area more attractive to shoppers, offering competition to the Sainsbury’s at Crystal Peaks and the Morrisons at Oxclose.
The council will study all the implications, including the impact on Crystal Peaks and other shopping districts and whether surrounding roads would be able to cope with the extra traffic.
Already Asda is building a superstore in Chaucer Road, Parson Cross, and other big supermarket groups are aiming to consolidate their hold in others parts of the city.
Sainsbury’s wants to open premises next to Fletcher’s Bakery at Wadsley Bridge, while a council decision is also awaited on a proposed major expansion of the Tesco off Abbeydale Road. It has already turned down Sainsbury’s application to extend its Archer Road store.
The Waterthorpe Asda would be 45,000 sq ft, sell food and non food goods, have a cafe and around 450 parking spaces and would be open 24 hours a day, except Sundays and Bank Holidays when it would open from 10am to 6pm.
