RED balloons were released at the opening of the new Barnsley College campus - with the help of actor Shaun Dooley and DJ Simon Hirst.

Local lads Shaun - star of Great Expectations, Benidorm and The Woman in Black - and award-winning jock Simon, set off the huge balloon launch.

The college on the Old Mill Lane site was open to the public for activities, workshops and performances.

There was also a chance to take a tour of the building and enjoy free games.

The new landmark building is now fully operational after nine years of planning and construction.

Students played their part in the action, with travel students leading tours of the building and art and design students hosting interactive craft sessions.

Former TV Apprentice finalist - Wakefield businesswoman Claire Young - held business advice sessions with students.

Other guests included pupils from primary and secondary schools around the town, local dignitaries and council representatives.

Colin Booth, college principal, said: “Having undergone significant redevelopment, the new campus offers superb facilities in a fantastic new building.”
