A YOUNG singer who lives in Edale in the Peak District was one of the winners in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Bella Hardy shared the award with veteran Steve Tilston for best new song for her story of The Herring Girl.

She grew up in Edale, with her family singing in the tiny village choir, and combined her interest in traditional ballads with a love for literature and storytelling.

She attended the renowned Folkworks summer school when she was just 13, going on to earn a degree in English Literature from York University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Newcastle.

Nominations for other awards included Sheffield-based guitarist and singer Martin Simpson and singer and fiddle player Jon Boden, frontman with Bellowhead.
