More than 70 jobs are at risk in the customer service department of a Sheffield distribution centre.

Menzies Distribution, on Europa Drive, Tinsley, has informed staff of plans to potentially shut its Sheffield customer service centre due to falling business.

The centre for the magazine and newspaper distribution firm has been in operation since 2007, with 72 workers employed in the department.

Its other customer services department, which employs 85 people, is based in Linwood, Scotland.

The company employs around 3,500 workers across its operations.

A spokesman said consultations are taking place with affected staff and it was ‘premature’ to talk about redundancies.

He said: “We are only at the stage of developing proposals so it is premature to talk about the effect on staff, especially while consultations with them are ongoing.

“This will depend on ongoing consultations with staff and how the proposals take shape, but we are committed to informing staff as soon as possible.

“The well-known decline of newspaper and magazine sales has had a major impact on our business and we need to continually review the efficiency of our operations.”

A letter sent to staff last week said ‘a number of options’ are being explored, including outsourcing all customer service calls or having one large flagship centre based elsewhere.

The letter said: “These are only options at this stage and we need to work through the impact and details of these thoroughly.”

One member of staff, who asked not to be named, said workers had been ‘aghast’ when they received the letters warning their jobs were under threat.

“The staff are 100 per cent behind the company and the customer service was second to none,” he said.

“Some people have been there for years and there are a lot of long-standing staff.

“No-one knew it was coming.”
