Boost for residents fighting scheme for block of apartments

Residents opposing a proposed block of flats in their neighbourhood off Ecclesall Road have been given a major boost.

They have won the backing of city planners who say the application for a three and four storey building on the site of an old tennis and volleyball court next to the former Polish Ex-Serviceman’s Club in Dover Road should be refused.

Planners say the site is suitable for housing, but “the scale, design and form of the development is out of character with its surroundings”. Councillors will decide whether to accept - or reject - the recommendation on Tuesday.

The scheme, for nine one bedroom flats and semi-undercroft parking for seven vehicles has prompted objections from nearby residents, local councillors and Sheffield Green Party.

A survey by the Botanical Area Community Association indicated 80% of respondents felt that the new building would overshadow a neighbouring property and 74% that it would damage the character of the area.
