Duct tape to doubling up, when it comes to sports bra horror stories, South Yorkshire Lakeside Village’s Wonderbra and Playtex team have seen them all.
So Doncaster shop staff have issued a seasonal SOS for ladies to shape up and select best supportive sports underwear to beat the bounce.
“An astounding 80 per cent of women are estimated to be wearing the wrong size bra,” reveals store manager Tracey Murphy.
"Many ladies do not even realise the importance of getting fitted professionally – especially when it comes to sports bras.
“Many ladies we see in the store wear their normal bra when exercising, which only reduces bounce by up to 38 per cent.
"A sports bra typically offers around 74 per cent less bounce.
“There are no muscles in the breast, only skin and delicate ligaments to support the breast tissue, so any excessive amount of breast movement puts strain on these ligaments, causing them to stretch.
“Nothing can then naturally restore that damage. So to protect your breasts during exercise and increased activity, you need to ensure you’re wearing a properly fitted, specially-designed sports bra that minimises bounce and maximises performance as much as possible.”
However, Tracey explains that different sports and activity levels can require different styles of sports bras. Low impact sports such as yoga will require a different level of support to a bra designed for high impact running.
Tracey added: “We carry out a lot of fittings here at the store. We’ve seen it all from a lady who was using duct tape to literally tape down her breasts for horse riding to women wearing two, even three, bras at once.
“However, the most common thing we see is women who are scared – sometimes terrified – of being fitted.
“We understand some ladies maybe nervous, but rest assured we are here to help, and will always do our very best to make the woman feel comfortable and leave feeling confident”
