Chamber forums back in bid to boost economy

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce is re-launching its forums to ensure members get their voice into the sector strategies aimed at growing the regional economy.

Linked with the key industries recently outlined in the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership business plan, the Sheffield Chamber, along with the Chambers in Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham, believe the forums will provide a vital platform for discussion.

Forums include well established groups such as transport, manufacturing and the Sheffield Property and Regeneration Committee (SPARC), while forums on the green economy and inspiring women will be reinvigorated and improved.

A key development will be the introduction of new forums such as retail, sport and leisure, professional services, digital industries and healthcare to reflect the region’s growing expertise in these sectors and their importance in its future economic growth.

Each forum will have a chair and vice chair and they will be responsible for developing business plans for each sector to feed into the new LEP board.

Richard Wright, executive director of the Sheffield Chamber, said: “We see the forums to be an integral part of the Chamber during 2011, helping to bring members together, not just to create discussion, but also to develop real plans for each sector.

“The forums will help identify the needs of businesses in South Yorkshire and we can then lobby local authorities and the government to ensure these views are listened to and acted upon.”
