Lawyers from DLA Piper’s Sheffield office spent a day in the saddle to raise money for the Master Cutler’s Challenge and Sheffield Mencap. The event is the latest in a series of fundraising initiatives planned over the course of the year, which have so far helped the law firm raise £8,500 for the two charities.

Held outside DLA Piper’s city centre offices, more than 50 staff cycled and rowed their way through the Peak District Challenge. Each team member was tasked with completing distances equivalent to rowing across Ladybower Reservoir and cycling around Castleton and Edale, over Whinnats Pass.

Using rowing machines and exercise bikes provided free of charge by Pure Gym, the participants had the choice of completing the Sprint or Olympic distances - either rowing 1.5km followed by a 2.5km cycle, or rowing 2.5km and cycling 10km.

Matthew Shaw from DLA Piper said: “Despite the damp conditions, our volunteers did a fantastic job completing the challenge under the watchful gaze of the passing public - no easy feat. We were particularly pleased to welcome Billy and Nicola, two representatives from Sheffield Mencap, who were very helpful in spurring us all along!

“We are regular supporters of the Master Cutler’s Challenge and also committed to the cause of Sheffield Mencap. We are proud to once again be supporting two worthwhile local initiatives and hope to raise a substantial amount for them both over the course of our fundraising programme this year.”

Janet Sullivan, CEO of Sheffield Mencap, added: “We are very grateful to everyone at DLA Piper for their efforts on our behalf. It is because of the generosity of our supporters that we are able to continue with the work we do for adults and children with a learning disability and their family carers in Sheffield.

“This year is our Diamond Jubilee Year and we are celebrating with a series of fundraising events.

“All funds raised will be used to refurbish and develop our sports facilities - a project which will be of huge benefit to our members on completion. DLA Piper’s ongoing support makes a big difference to us and we’re absolutely delighted that they have chosen to support us with their fundraising this year.”
