A Barnsley manufacturer reckons it has the edge over rivals in the cut-throat competition for talented recruits - a Sheffield City Region Business Award.

Cutting Technologies won Business of the Year at the event last July and the directors say the profile and prestige it brought “helped enormously” in finding staff.

It also played a part in the firm’s successful £135,000 Regional Growth Fund grant, they say, which in turn has led to the firm investing £1.25m in the most advanced laser equipment in the world.

The City Region Business Awards will return for the third year on Thursday July 2, at Ponds Forge International Sport Centre in Sheffield. The competition takes the winners of the business awards run by the region’s four Chambers of Commerce - plus the Derbyshire Times newspaper - to reveal the ‘first among winners’.

Cutting Technologies claimed its place after a win in the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber awards.

Director Jane Robinson said: “Winning the Sheffield City Region award was a huge surprise, but has been excellent for our local and regional profile. Like many industries, manufacturing is facing a skills shortage but by achieving local and regional success we’re able to showcase Cutting Technologies to potential employees. This means the most talented people in the industry are aware of us and our successes, which helps enormously when recruiting.”

Last year Jane was accepted as a Freeman of the Company of Cutlers in Sheffield and named one of the Top 100 Role Models in manufacturing by leading industry magazine The Manufacturer.

“Investing in PR and entering awards as part of our wider marketing strategy has really paid off across the business. We cited our increased profile in our successful £135,000 RGF Funding bid and explained how winning awards and the associated media coverage helps us reach new customers.”

The company is now eyeing further growth at its 18,000sq foot factory on Zenith Business Park, Whaley Road, Barnsley.

Cutting Technologies produces work for household names such as Rekorderlig, Mulberry and Puma and artists like Antony Gormley and Conrad Shawcross.

“Winning the Sheffield City Region Award has been the springboard to a fabulous year,” Jane added, “We’re growing across the board but we’re particularly seeing lots more work from companies working in the construction sector.

“And we will create 10 jobs by spring 2016.”
