Westfield Health has become the first local business to provide financial backing to a scheme supporting elite sports stars from the University of Sheffield.
The Elite Sport Performance Scheme was launched with the aim of providing its elite athletes, all of whom represent their country, with the support needed to ensure they can be successful in the sport whilst also achieving academic excellence.
There are currently 28 athletes on the programme, with at least one hoping to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the London Olympics in 2012.
Paul Shires, Westfield Health sales and marketing director, said: “This scheme is a perfect example of health, education and business working together towards a common goal, and we’re delighted to be involved.’’
Tracey Baker, head of sport at the university, said: “We’re delighted to have Westfield Health on board. The company has shown a great deal of interest in the scheme right from the start and we’re hoping that their involvement will provide the catalyst needed for this scheme to really take off in Sheffield.’’
