The rag and tag is long gone, Sheaf Market came and went and now Castle Market is about to go into history.
Few will doubt that the place became increasingly rundown as the talking went on over a replacement.
Many Castle stallholders - and a fair number of characters among them - are moving to the £18m complex on The Moor where the facilities are undoubtedly better for them and their customers.
But it is to be hoped that the traditional markets atmosphere that attracted shoppers for many years will not be lost in the switch across the city centre. Castle was always the place for a bargain, whether it be a pork chop or a packet of buttons, and a bit of banter.
After Saturday, the bustle will finally die, and the council will be able to get on with its demolition plans.
