Arts Tower rises to top in awards
Sheffield University Arts Tower
RENOVATION of the University of Sheffield’s Arts Tower was highlighted this week in the Sheffield Design Awards 2012.
Refurbished by HLM Architects, the grade II* listed 60s tower won the Peoples’ Choice prize at a ceremony at the Showroom Cinema on Tuesday night. It was described as a fine example of modern architectural conservation.
Best Building Award went to 192 Shoreham Street, the refurbishment and extension of an old coachworks into offices, by Project Orange, and Small Project Award to Horsefield House, a Victorian house, by Prue Chiles Architects.
Commended were a new house in Stumperlowe Crescent Road by Sagar Stevenson Architects (residential), Parkwood Academy by HLM Architects (community design) and Marks & Spencer Simply Food in Ecclesall Road by Lewis & Hickey (sustainability).
The awards, run by Sheffield Civic Trust and the Royal Institute of British Architects Yorkshire, were hosted by architect Sarah Wigglesworth, of the University of Sheffield.
