Aspire urges business to think green

ASPIRE Sheffield, the organisation that helps vulnerable and socially excluded people back into the workplace, is urging the city's business community to think green and help a good cause.

One of the organisation's principal income streams is giving fresh life to redundant office technology.

The Aspire team has found this strand of its operation so successful that it needs a constant supply of unwanted computer and IT equipment to meet demand.

And now the call has gone out to all the region's businesses to think of Aspire Sheffield before discarding unwanted and obsolete items.

"Just because your business no longer has a need for something doesn't mean we can't find a home for it," said Dave Metcalfe, general manager of the organisation that is based in Hillsborough.

"Companies are upgrading their computer systems all the time and too often look for the obvious means of disposal which means the equipment they no longer use often goes off to be shredded or stripped when Aspire can find a new home for it."

Among the items most sought after are good quality laptops, LCD screen monitors and laser printers, all of which Aspire can convert into vital funding to continue its work with the homeless and socially excluded.

"A good lap top could bring us something like 40 and often even a lot more.

"It makes good sense to think about what use can be found for unwanted items rather than simply disposing of them.

"Funding this year is tight, as it is for every charity organisation, which is why we are so keen to develop commercial revenue in this way.

"We are not simply asking for handouts - we are looking at positive ways to help ourselves and the people we support."
