Balfour Beatty staff in strike vote

WORKERS at Balfour Beatty Engineering Services have voted overwhelmingly for a second time to strike over the termination of agreements with unions and the de-skilling of construction workers.

Electricians, plumbers and heating and ventilating engineers at the company, which has bases in Sheffield and Doncaster, voted by two to one for strike action.

But the firm is taking the workers’ union Unite to court in a bid to stop the walkout.

Bernard McAulay, national officer for the Unite trade union, said: “Balfour Beatty needs to recognise it has lost the support of its employees. They need to re-join the industry wide agreements which have served the industry so well.

“Our members know that Balfour Beatty is a vastly profitable company and that it has no need whatsoever to rob them of their livelihoods so that it can increase its profits.”

Balfour Beatty, which succeeded in blocking the first strike with legal action, is taking the union to court on Tuesday to halt further industrial action.

The company said: “We are keen to talk to Unite about moving forward and for Unite to recognise the importance of implementing a new more modern agreement better designed to suit the needs of the industry and our customers.”
