Watching Boo Boo Davis is like looking at a sepia print from a 1940s blues gig. Clad in a brown suit, with a brown hat and shiny shoes, James 'Boo Boo' Davis sits on a tall stool hunching over the microphone.
He oozes the aura of the authentic bluesman, born and bred in the Mississippi Delta. Davis' curriculum vitae includes backing blues legends such as Sonny Boy Williamson and Elmore James.
This is a no-nonsense, straight-up gig. Marching through songs in a two-set show, Davis is indefatigable. His set includes standards such as Little Red Rooster and new material from his latest album, Drew, Mississippi – named after his hometown.
As Davis utters the first line of Little Red Rooster, he receives a wave of appreciation from the audience. He draws a harmonica from a pocket full of them and rips through a stunning harmonica section.
His own material goes down equally well – Got the Blues in My Heart is an upbeat, funky number with slide guitar, visceral harmonica playing and well-woven drumming.
Far from blue, Davis' demeanour is upbeat and jovial, as he recites an anecdote about the blues – his only chat during the set: "I had a friend who said: You get the blues, you drive round in your car, go home, and it's all ok – until you get the blues again!"
