CD REVIEW: Stone Roses The Collector's Edition and Legacy Edition

IT'S 20 years since The Stone Roses released their self-titled debut. It's hard to imagine that what is now dubbed as one of rock and roll's most seminal albums was released without so much as a muttering of hype.

But now, there is hype, deservedly so as Sony rereleases classic debut that contributed to the soundtrack of the subsequent 20 years.

Listening to the release, fully re-mastered by original producer John Leckie, The Stone Roses is not only a nostalgic journey, it's a sonic rediscovery.

As the industrial backdrop to I Wanna Be Adored builds to a rumbling bass line it's impossible not to revel in the Roses' master crafting. Immediately we're taken back to A-level art lessons and gigantic A1 Stone Roses posters. In fact, the album's evocative powers are so strong that each note becomes a mnemonic.

Leckie's remastering is slick and sharp. Whether it's the lapse of time that allowed one to forget the nuances of Waterfall or Shoot You Down or Leckie's remastering is questionable, but the result – by whatever means – is equally effective.

The only track exempt from rediscovery is I Am the Resurrection, whose over-familiarity eschews nostalgic evocation or uncharted notes.

Disc 2 is the bonus gem, with demo versions of I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drum and Waterfall.

The Collector's Edition comes with bonus discs, unseen footage and interviews with famous fans. The Legacy Edition comes with a remastered album, a DVD of the Blackpool Empress Ballroom gig and an additional cd of lost demos.
