Contract is child's play

Timberplay, the Sheffield-based playground designer, has won a contract to create a new "natural play space" at Europe's largest shopping and leisure centre, The Metrocentre in Gateshead.

The deal is the latest in a string of new contracts for the company, based at Aizlewood's Mill, on Nursery Street.

Marketing manager Martyn Scholey said: "We were delighted to learn that we had been successful in winning the Metrocentre contract. Our plans include imaginative play equipment all designed specifically to appeal to children from three to 10. Despite only recently winning the award, our contactors already completed the installation in preparation for the opening."

Key parts of the Metrocentre contract include a wheelchair carousel, dance chimes, suspension bridge and a central tower unit, which incorporates a climbing wall, ropes and a fireman's pole.

The Metrocentre contract comes as Timberplay's managing director, Paul Collings, launched a sister company called Playgarden Design and Resources.

Playgarden will target nurseries, pre-schools and primary schools with an online service – www.playgardens.co.uk – offering landscape design services and fixed play equipment for outdoor play areas.

Paul Collings says play areas in schools and nurseries are often sterile, bland environments, dominated by equipment.

"Most do recognise that nature is important but don't know how to capture this and bring it into the play environment. We can make it easier and more cost effective."
