DavyMarkham strikes gold with $20m deal

DavyMarkham, the Sheffield heavy engineering specialist, has clinched a $20 million contract for winding gear and associated technology to Canadian gold producer, IAMGOLD Corporation.

Darnall-based DavyMarkham beat off international competition to win the order from what is a major new customer.

The Prince of Wales Road firm is supplying Toronto-based IAMGOLD with mining hoists, associated electrical drives and controls capable of lifting loads of 20 tonnes from 8,700 feet – or 1.7 miles – underground.

DavyMarkham's managing director, Kevin Parkin, said: "This is a very important contract gain for DavyMarkham and it is testimony to the cutting-edge design engineering technology we are applying to this key market sector and the extreme precision of our heavy engineering.

"The IAMGOLD Corporation is a major new customer for us and we are delighted to have won this major order in international competitive tender."

DavyMarkham will design and make a 21ft diameter production hoist and an 18ft double drum service hoist, together with associated clutch assemblies and multi-channel hydraulic brake control system for IAMGOLD.

Meanwhile, it has sub-contracted provision of the drive systems for both hoists, including high voltage motors, industrial drive units, a digital hoist control system and a hoist operator station, to ABB Montreal, with whom it has been working closely in recent years.

DavyMarkham has to meet an extremely tight contract deadline, as IAMGOLD wants to accelerate its exploration programme, but work is currently on schedule.

The IAMGOLD contract is the latest success for the Sheffield firm since it began developing world-beating mine winder technology in recent years.

The firm has made particular inroads into the flourishing Canadian minerals market, supplying more than a dozen new hoists for gold and nickel mining projects and was the first in the North American market to meet with the internationally-recognised South African SABS codes of practice, for deep shaft exploration.
