Far from a child’s play, an old Jag goes for £360
Jaguar XK120 by Japanese manufacturer Yonezana, went under the hammer for �360 at the Sheffield Auction Galleries Spring Specialist Collectable Toys Sale.
A COLLECTION of more than 1,000 models of Jaguar cars drove up prices at an auction in Sheffield.
All 248 lots - owned by businessman Ken Chapman - were sold for a fraction under £15,000.
The highlight of the section was a tinplate Jaguar XK120 by Japanese manufacturer Yonezana, finished in red and with its original box, which had a pre-sale estimate of £100 to £120.
It went under the hammer for £360 at the Sheffield Auction Galleries Spring Specialist Collectable Toys Sale.
Mr Chapman, who lives in Lincolnshire and used to be chairman of Swindon Town FC, had a lifelong passion for real Jaguars and built up his model collection over 20 years.
Now retired and downsizing, he has always been keen to keep his collection on display and decided to pass it to new custodians. His favourite model is the Jaguar XK120. The collection was part of a sale of large specialist toys and collectables at the gallery in Windsor Road, off Chesterfield Road.
It covered many manufacturers, from the contemporary to the modern, tinplate to diecast and plastic, and over many scales.
Manufacturers included the mainstream of Dinky, Corgi, Matchbox, Autoart and some of the more unusual like Tekno, Solido, Nicky and Norev.
Specialist valuer John Morgan said: “Single owner, single marque collections of this size and scope always throw up the rare, unusual and sometimes unique which is why they are so exciting. Jaguar author Mike Driver, who was in attendance at the auction, was even able to find a number of Jaguars that had not appeared in his book, widely recognized as the leading publication of Jaguar model cars.”
A large model steam collection, including locos, tenders, tools and machinery, amassed by the late Alan Vardy of Chesterfield also generated interest in the saleroom and over the internet.
The highest price was £4,560 for the 5” gauge Green Arrow, followed by £4,080 for the 3.5” gauge, light railway locomotive, called Joan.
The next auction specialises in UK sporting memorabilia, including football programmes, along with specialist collectable toys, on April 5 at 11am.
