Grant helps Sabine make light work of a radical career change

Singing her own praises to show off her new work has come easy to lampworker Sabine Little with the help of a small grant from UK Steel Enterprise.

Trained as an opera singer in London, Sabine is currently juggling a full time job at Sheffield University and a young family whilst she sets up her new business, Now Forevermore, making wedding and celebration jewellery, hair accessories and cake toppers from glass beads which she also makes herself.

Sabine is the first to access a small grant from the Capital Fund of Corus Group subsidiary UK Steel Enterprise which is working in partnership with the University to help kickstart new businesses in Sheffield. Eligible applicants can get a grant of up to 500 for any legitimate start up business costs. With the UKSE grant Sabine bought a digital photoframe to display her work at exhibitions.

"The money came through at a crucial time," she said. "I had a small grant from the University which enabled me to book a stand at the UK Wedding Show in Manchester, I was the only one-woman business there. The digital photo frame meant I was able to show off my work to the public, from which I got a few orders."

Originally from Germany, Sabine came to the UK to study opera at Trinity College of Music and to learn English. But deciding she was too young and her voice not mature enough to follow a performing career, she came to Sheffield to study for a Masters in Education. She then taught for a while, and in the evenings did a silversmithing course.

It was on a trip to Venice that she became fascinated by working with glass, and on her return enrolled on a lampworking course- making beads from glass - which she sculptures into individual pieces such as roses and butterflies integrating that with her silversmithing skills to produce bridal jewellery and hair accessories.

Her website, www.nowforevermore.com features her glass creations including some very special items made from the champagne bottles saved from weddings and other celebrations.

Calling at her workshop in Bolsterstone, UK Steel Enterprise executive Allan Wood commented, "Sabine's work is quite exquisite and very unusual. I'm sure her jewellery will add something really special and memorable to many celebration events to come. The digital frame was a good idea to show off her work and I'm glad we were able to help her get it."
