Harmony's back
VILLAGE Harmony, the international singing group based in New England, is back in Sheffield on July 1 by popular demand – of the singers themselves.
Not just a choir but an on-going musical project to research different kinds of harmony singing around the world, they will bring music from South Africa, Corsica, Georgia and Bulgaria as well as American gospel and "shape-note" singing to Upper Chapel in Norfolk Street, in a joint concert with the Sheffield women's choir Body of Sound.
Village Harmony's junior choir, Northern Voices, were hosted in Sheffield by Body of Sound last October. They enjoyed the experience so much that their director Patty Cuyler asked to come back to the city with a choir of all age groups when planning this year's ten-day tour of the UK, according to Body of Sound's Musical Director, Helen Lyle.
She said: "Their concert repertoire is highly unusual – all sorts of different kinds of harmony singing from across the world. It's a thrilling range for us and for our audiences alike."
The 18-strong ensemble is recruited mainly from Britain and New England, originally settled by the psalm-singing Pilgrim Fathers, but the current tour is co-directed by the Bulgarian Dessi Stefanova and the Georgian Malkhaz Erkvanidze.
