Hewlett awarded E.ON contract
HEWLETT Civil Engineering has been awarded a multi-million pound contract with energy company E.ON to provide site remediation and a new road infrastructure at the site of a former coal-fired power station in Sheffield.
Blackburn Meadows, close to the M1 viaduct in Sheffield, is the site for a renewable energy plant which will provide enough energy to service the needs of around 40,000 homes.
The main scope of the contract is to provide an extensive remediation service to prepare the 60,000m area for the new facility by shifting over 200,000m of material. There is also a recycling element to the contract that will reprocess areas of the land in order to re-stabilise it for construction. In addition, Hewlett will also generate a flood compensation zone on the site.
Lee Ferreday, Hewlett's Contracts Director, said: "We are proud to get the go-ahead on this contract, which is a significant step in our plan to establish an ongoing commitment to working with a leading energy company such as E.ON.
"We have worked closely with our client during the tendering process and we hope to continue to develop strong relationships with them to ensure the project is successfully completed."
The renewable energy plant will be a state of the art facility that will displace the emission of around 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, the equivalent of taking more than 20,000 cars off the UK's roads each year by burning 'carbon neutral' fuel in place of traditional fossil fuels like coal and gas.
In addition, construction and operation of the facility will provide highly skilled employment opportunities for both Hewlett and the area.
Hewlett's contract began on 29th June and will complete within 45 weeks.
Hewlett has in-depth remediation expertise and a strong and proven track record in the region. This is the first time the company has worked with E.ON, having reportedly won the two-stage tender based on its ability to provide integrated services, which allows the project to be supported by their in-house experts.
