Historic start to a new chapter of sheffield life at the mount

ONE of Sheffield's most historical buildings has become a centre of learning for international students.

A+ English, a school dedicated to teaching English as a foreign language, has relocated to the Mount, a grade 2 listed building in Broomhill.

Founded in 2007, A+ English is run by Directors Michelle Berhanu and Zoe Graham.

The school, which employs 25 members of staff, currently teaches around 50 multi-national students from as far a field as Kenya, Russia, Japan, China and Saudi Arabia. The students study for spoken examinations in English.

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Graham Oxley, officially opened A+ new premises with the Master and Mistress Cutler also in attendance.

For Martin Howell and his wife Elaine, the Mount holds a special place in their heart as it is where the pair first met.

The couple, who are celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary this year, worked at the Mount when it was the headquarters of British Steel Corporation 38 years ago, where Martin was as a graduate and Elaine a receptionist.

Both were taken on a tour of the new look building and commentated on how lovely it was to come back and wished A+ well in their new home.

Michelle Berhanu, Director of A+ English, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have relocated A+ English to the Mount. When we began looking for new premises, this was the first building we saw and we knew it was perfect for us.

"The renovation and development of the Mount has taken over a year and we are delighted to have officially opened our doors. The building is in a great location and has fantastic history, which are proud to be part of.

"The school provides language courses that are flexible and tailored to suit the individual needs of each student. The majority of our students are university under-graduates and study with us for three to six months. I am sure that studying in such grand surroundings will be an added benefit to them."
