IoD accolade for directors

THE Institute of Directors (IoD) has awarded its Chartered Director status to two of the directors at a Sheffield-based manufacturer.

Peter Holmes, managing director of market-leading magnet manufacturer Anchor Magnets, and Neil O'Keefe, the company's finance director, have both achieved the accolade, which recognises an individual's capabilities as a director. Despite there being 50,000 members of the IoD in the UK, only 800 have been admitted as Chartered Directors. To gain chartered status candidates have to submit portfolios of experience to a professional interview panel and satisfy the IoD's Professional Accreditation Committee.

The expert knowledge gained from the IoD programme has brought a variety of business benefits to Anchor Magnets, which has a turnover of more than 4 million and employs 40 staff.

Mr Holmes, 47, commented: "Even as a relatively small company we have always been determined to run the business with the utmost professionalism. Corporate governance and director responsibility are very important to us and we wanted to ensure that we adopted best practice. The IoD training has helped us to do that."

Mr O'Keefe, 45, added: "The programme has given us the expert knowledge and guidance to run our company efficiently and profitably. Our board meetings are now more strategic, we've developed the skills and ability to interrogate our market and customer base in a more thorough way, and we've enhanced our decision-making skills. We hope all of this will help safeguard the future of the business."

John Thompson, Regional Director of the IoD in Yorkshire, said: "Being a Chartered Director allows business leaders to demonstrate to stakeholders, clients, suppliers, employees and customers that they take their role and the responsibility it brings very seriously. It also helps provide people with the skills and tools to take their business to the next level."

Since completing the IoD programme Anchor Magnets has restructured its board to improve performance and brought experienced Yorkshire dealmaker Jo Haigh on board as a non-executive director.
