Staff from Irwin Mitchell with their medal from the 2011 Sheffield Half Marathon Corporate Team Challenge

A SHEFFIELD law firm is challenging businesses to pound the streets and battle it out in one of the city’s biggest road races.

A team from Irwin Mitchell is set to take part in the 2012 SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon Corporate Team Challenge in an attempt to defend their title, after winning the competition for the last three years.

Around 16 runners from Irwin Mitchell will make up teams in the challenge with many more staff taking part in the individual race. Staff will be raising money for the firm’s charity of the year, Help the Hospices.

Solicitor James Berry, who organises the teams, said: “Being such an anticipated event in the Sheffield calendar it doesn’t take much persuading to take part in the Sheffield Half Marathon.

“This is not only a great way to see the sights and sounds of Sheffield but it is an unmissable opportunity to be part of a group of people who are passionate about making a difference and striving to push themselves to achieve their best.

“There are a lot of runners at Irwin Mitchell who regularly take part in full and half marathons across the country, but we also have a number of teams and individuals who have not entered them before but are keen to support and raise funds for charities close to their hearts.”

Companies can enter as teams in the Corporate Team Challenge with groups of four individuals from organisations that are not athletics clubs.

All members of the team compete over the half marathon distance and the accumulated time of the three fastest runners comprises the team score.

The official charities for the 2012 event are: British Heart Foundation, Myasthenia Gravis Association, St Luke’s Hospice, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre South Yorkshire, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Sheffield Teenage Cancer Trust, Support Dogs, Breast Cancer Care and The Children’s Hospital Charity.

The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 27 at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV) managed facility Don Valley Stadium at the new start time of 9:00am. 5,500 places are available for the race.

As well as the half marathon, Sheffield’s Great Fun Run will also take place. Entry to this event is open to everyone.
