Margaret takes High Sheriff Award
THE winner of the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire Award for 2010 is 78-year-old voluntary worker Margaret Young.
Margaret was proposed for the award which recognises outstanding work in the community by Kevin Bradley, the director of the St Wilfrid's Centre in Sheffield, where Margaret has been working as a volunteer for the charity since its launch in 1991.
St Wilfrid's supports the homeless, the vulnerable and the socially excluded and grandmother Margaret works two days every week preparing meals and talking to and providing support for the centre's many visitors.
A keen fundraiser, she has only recently completed her tenth 15 mile hike in the Peak District to raise funds for St Wilfrid's.
Margaret also helps at Sheffield's Victoria Hall Sunday food provision for the homeless and also finds time to visit the housebound in her local area, ensuring that they hear a friendly voice and that they don't feel too isolated.
Margaret received her award - including 500 prize, provided by the James Neill Trust Fund, for the charity of her choice - from High Sheriff Helena Muller in a ceremony at Sheffield University.
Helena said: "When most people are thinking of putting their feet up and retiring Margaret continues to devote her life to making a real difference to the most excluded and abandoned people in our society"
Receiving the High Sheriff's Youth Award, presented to an outstanding volunteer under the age of 18, was Latasha Snowdon, of the Exodus Project in Barnsley.
First starting with the Project as just a member of the Exodus Kidz Klub at just eight years old, then moving on through the secondary group, Rock Solid, Latasha has risen through the ranks from club member through to a Junior Leader, giving up her time after school to ensure that the clubs take place in two locations each week.
Still under 18, she dedicates every Tuesday and Thursday evening to working with the eight to eleven-year-olds that attend her old group Kidz Klub.
Latasha - who received a 250 cash prize for her chosen charity - was nominated in recognition of her commitment, dedication and persistence, as well as her helpful nature and enthusiasm.
Helena commented: "Latasha even at such a young age has proved that she is prepared to give back to society and we hope that this award will give her the impetus to achieve greater things"
