Museum asks for booze licence to hold functions
KELHAM Island Museum is applying for a permanent licence to host functions and wedding receptions, along with a themed summer market and to allow limited off-sales of alcohol.
Six residents of nearby flats are objecting to the proposals due to the potential for late- night noise and disorder.
The application is to be considered at a meeting of Sheffield Council’s licensing committee on Thursday, January 3.
Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust already hosts events such as weddings but has to apply for a temporary licence for each one.
The organisation is seeking to extend ‘all licensable activities’ until 2am, and hold a historical-themed summer market each July at which alcohol would be sold.
The trust’s application said: “The premises will continue to operate predominantly as an educational museum and will not change.
“Revenue generated from the ancilliary activities will be used to support and develop the museum.”
Residents opposing the museum’s plans argue the events could cause ‘public nuisance’.
Andrew Griffiths, one of the objectors, said: “The only way out from the museum is past the Kelham Riverside development, in which I am a resident. It is not reasonable to expect crowds returning home late from an event where alcohol is served to be considerate when walking past a residential area.”
But another resident, Richard Smith, supported the plans. He said: “I believe problems would be few and it would help the area develop.”
