Sheffield businessman set to take on Tesco

A BUSINESSMAN is hitting back at Tesco - by offering home deliveries in a Sheffield suburb branded a ‘no go’ area by the supermarket giant.
Kabarak Sadiq, aged 38, who owns the best-one supermarket on Leighton Road, Gleadless Valley, made the decision after Tesco refused to deliver an online order to Denise Devall, aged 69, and her daughter Karen Dingle, 43, of Gleadless Valley.
Mr Sadiq, who runs two supermarkets and a number of other businesses in Sheffield, said: “Residents can come in and buy their shopping, and we will deliver it to their homes. I’m also going to set up a website in the new year so customers can order online.
“Gleadless Valley gets bad publicity and we have our problems, but which part of the city doesn’t?
“It doesn’t mean Tesco can completely alienate a community and exclude people – our money here is as good as anyone else’s.
“How can such a big company exclude people from a basic service? They are still paying their money so they should get a similar level of service.
“Tesco can stay away. My message is we don’t need you – we can do it ourselves and we can do it better than you.”
Mr Sadiq added: “It is a business opportunity of course, but I was thinking of offering the service anyway.”
He and his wife Asma, also 38, have run best-one for two years.
“It’s a big building and, when we first took over, the area was a magnet for anti-social behaviour,” he said. “But we have turned it around completely.
“We have had a lot of support from the police, and Gleadless Valley Forum is doing a fantastic job to lift up the area.
“We are not prepared to let the area get run-down any further.”
Karen Dingle said after her plight appeared in The Star, Tesco did deliver her £192 Christmas grocery order – by taxi, at the company’s expense.
But she said: “They are still saying they won’t deliver to this area.
“I think it’s great Mr Sadiq is offering a delivery service – it’s a really nice idea and it means residents will be supporting a local business.”
