Sheffield City Centre Christmas parking charges dropped

Charges are being slashed at car parks in Sheffield city centre to pull in Christmas shoppers.

From Monday, November 19, rates will be cut to £3 for up to six hours, compared with £9.30 at present.

The change will take place at eight council-owned car parks – Carver Street, Rockingham Street, Wellington Street, Rockingham Way, Stanley Lane, Silver Street, Wicker Lane and Willey Street – which have a total of 602 spaces.

It will not apply for on-street parking or at some other sites such as Devonshire Green.

Last year, the council caused controversy by scrapping a free parking scheme in the run-up to Christmas, which had operated on Wednesday nights and Saturdays in previous years.

The new discounted parking offer will apply all week.

The plan was welcomed by shopkeepers.

Elizabeth Askam, of florists Plantology, on Division Street, close to several of the car parks where cheaper charges will apply, said: “Hopefully, the offer will tempt a few more people into the city centre and help boost trade.”

The new rate is being brought in the day after the Christmas lights switch-on, on Sunday, November 18.

Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for business, skills and development Coun Leigh Bramall said: “It is vital that we support the city centre in the current climate which is why we are introducing this new shopper rate of £3 for six hours and we hope this will bring people into the city centre for Christmas shopping.

“Labour have made it a priority to be a business- friendly council which is why we have introduced important schemes such as the Sheffield Apprenticeship Programme which supports local businesses to take on an apprentice and the Keep Sheffield Working Fund offering financial help for firms.

“It is vital for our city’s economy to have a vibrant city centre, which is why we are taking action to support businesses and secure its long term future through key projects such as the Moor redevelopment and continuing our work to deliver Sevenstone.”

Barnsley Council is offering free parking to shoppers in the town centre after 4pm on Wednesdays in the run up to Christmas, from Wednesday, November 21, until December 19.

Rotherham Council is providing free parking on Saturdays only from November 17 until December 22.
