Sheffield roads closed in downpours

HEAVY rain led to flooding and road closures on Saturday afternoon.

Limb Lane in Dore, Sheffield, was closed from its junction with Ecclesall Road South to Ash House Lane. In Rotherham, Hoober Hall Lane, America Lane, Lee Brook Road and Packman Road were all closed due to flooding.

Derbyshire Fire Service was called to rescue 21 people who got stuck in their vehicles on flooded roads in a 12 hour period on Saturday.

A spokesman said most had ignored flood warning signs.

“If you can’t se the kerb it is not worth the risk,” he said. “Once water gets in the engine then it shuts down and you will be stuck. And that can happen even if you are in a 4x4 vehicle.”

* FIREFIGHTERS put out a blaze in a chimney from a log-burning stove on Braithwell Road, Ravensfield, Rotherham last Thursday. Crews used an aerial ladder to put out the flames from above.
