Sheffield store jobs boost

FIVE HUNDRED jobs are set to be created in Sheffield after a supermarket giant uveiled plans for a new city store.
Asda wants to demolish the Home Décor Innovations factory, off Beighton Road East, Drakehouse, and replace it with a huge 24-hour superstore, petrol station, and car park with hundreds of spaces.
Up to 400 jobs would be created in the store, with at least another 100 expected to be involved in building the new supermarket as well as a replacement factory for Home Décor.
Asda already has outline approval for the development, but has now submitted final proposals for planning permission.
Philip Bartram, for Asda, said: “We will be commencing work on our plans for a new store in Drakehouse next year.
“The development represents a significant investment in this part of Sheffield and will create up to 400 new jobs in the local community. Asda works closely with organisations such as Jobcentre Plus, to target employment opportunities into the communities we operate in. We are looking forward to being an active part of the local community.”
Asda said the store would feature its ‘famous low prices in continuing tough economic times’ and a ‘full range of Asda products including George clothing’.
But residents in nearby Waterthorpe had mixed feelings about the proposals.
Terry McHale, aged 67, a retired Sheffield University security guard, said: “I think the new store will be alright – competition would be a good thing, giving people more choice.
“There aren’t many local shops around here for it to impact upon.”
