HOTEL bosses in South Yorkshire are reporting a major boost in visitor numbers as racing starts today for Doncaster’s St Leger meeting.

Visitors are arriving from all over the world, with today’s Leger Legends race cited as one of the reasons for an early rush on accommodation.

There are 16 well-known ex-jockeys competing in the Legends race, including the most successful female and American Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone, the multi-champion Irish flat jockey Mick Kinane, and Richard Hills, number one jockey to Hamdan Al Maktoum, who retired in February.

All 163 rooms at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel, in Sheffield city centre, are fully booked tonight, while the Aston Hall Hotel - close to the M1 - is also packed with guests.

“We’re really busy at the moment - we’ve got a high occupancy this weekend,” a receptionist at Aston Hall told The Star.

Hotels closer to the action in Doncaster are running special race-themed events, while The Mount Pleasant Hotel, on Great North Road, Bawtry, has attracted guests from America.

Bosses at Doncaster Racecourse say they are expecting around 60,000 visitors to the Town Moor course over the four days of racing.
