Tesco admits defeat

TESCO has ruled out asking the Government to overturn the council’s rejection of a proposed neighbourhood store off Ecclesall Road South, Parkhead.

It had the option of appealing to Communities Secretary Eric Pickles after councillors refused an application to redevelop the site of a former garage near the Wheatsheaf pub. That would have led to a public inquiry.

But a Tesco spokesperson confirmed this week that an appeal would not be lodged.

Councillors rejected the scheme because of inadequate off-street car parking and disturbance to neighbours amid widespread community protests. Two petitions had a total of more than 3,100 names,

It was the second time that Tesco had tried to secure permission for the site, which is opposite Parkhead Crescent, changing the layout and delivery arrangements in an attempt to overcome objections.
