Michael Vaughan and former patient Owen Wilkinson, ten, unveil the train that is being named after Sheffiled's Children Hospital

FORMER England cricket captain - and more recently BBC Strictly Come Dancing star - Michael Vaughan was in a different kind of training this week.

He was at Sheffield railway station on Tuesday to help name a train in honour of the Children’s Hospital.

Joining him were representatives of the Children’s Hospital Charity, East Midlands Trains, which runs services between Sheffield and London, and former hospital patient and cricket fan Owen Wilkinson, aged ten.

The naming of East Midlands Trains’ Meridian train 222 004 as ‘Children’s Hospital Sheffield’ follows staff at Sheffield station supporting the charity through fund-raising and auctions, as well as displaying promotional materials at the station.

Michael said: “Many people aren’t aware that there are only four dedicated children’s hospitals in the country and we are lucky enough to have one here in Sheffield. You only need to read Owen’s story to see what an extraordinary place it is.”

Owen, aged ten, of Barnsley, had his life saved by surgeons after a fall at school caused a skull fracture and severe bleeding on the brain.

His mum Caroline said: “We wouldn’t have Owen today without their care and dedication.”

The Children’s Hospital Charity is aiming to raise £20m towards a £40m redevelopment project.
