Miner’s lamp shines at Sheffield auction

Bidders took a shine to brass miners’ lamp in boxes of unwanted collectables taken to Sheffield Auction Gallery.

It turned out to be a 19th century George Stephenson “Geordie” safety lamp. Bidding opened at £1,200 - and shot up to £2,600.

“Pre-auction interest was considerable as these lamps rarely come onto the open market,” said a spokesperson for the gallery in Windsor Road, Heeley.
