THE Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, visited the Wolf Safety Lamp Company in Heeley yesterday (Wednesday) and unveiled a plaque marking the company’s centenary.

Wolf Safety began life in the city in 1912 as a manufacturer of safety lamps used in coal mines to protect against the risk of gas explosions.

Miners’ lamps continued to be made into the 1970s but, as demand from the coal industry diminished, the company diversified into the manufacture of industrial safety lamps for offshore oil and gas production and processing, firefighting, power generation and public utilities. The company has operated from the Saxon Road Works since 1933. It has a staff of 37 and more than 60% of sales go for export.

Later, Prince Edward attended the opening ceremony of the European Figure Skating Championships at the Motorpoint Arena in Attercliffe.
