Sheffield’s two rival options for a potential new HS2 station are to be assessed by specialist consultants.

Sheffield City Region Combined Authority, which represents local councils in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, is in the process of commissioning consultants to run the study.

The report will look into the connectivity requirements of both the prospective new station at Meadowhall – the preferred Government option – and the alternative proposal for it to be based at the former Victoria Station in Sheffield city centre.

A spokesman for the combined authority said the report will not suggest which location would be better but will instead focus on highlighting what work will be necessary should either site be selected by the Government.

As the consultants are being chosen through a tendering process, it is not yet known how much it will cost to carry out the study.

The spokesman said: “A connectivity study has been commissioned by Sheffield City Region Combined Authority through the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.

“The purpose of the study is to assess the connectivity requirements for both station location options in the City Region.

“This means that, once a decision is made, whichever location the Government decides both plans are in an equal state of readiness.

“It does not take a view on which location is most beneficial for the City Region, it simply assesses the work that would need to be done should either option be chosen.”

He added: “Specifically, the study will look at early delivery of new station facilities, at both Victoria and Meadowhall, the preliminary business case, station design brief and communication and engagement.”

Sir David Higgins, chairman of HS2 Ltd, is due to publish a report this autumn on how northern cities such as Sheffield can be connected to high-speed rail more quickly than planned under the current timetable.

Current plans for the city to be included in the second phase of the multi-billion scheme mean the link would not be in place until the early 2030s.

It is intended Sheffield would be part of an eastern leg of HS2 between the East Midlands and Leeds.
