And his persistance paid off, as the Intake schoolboy was the first in hundreds of people allowed in the Apple store to buy the phone yesterday, before heading off back to lessons.

Excited Elliott had been waiting since 4pm the previous day for the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet, which has a host of new features, design and technology, to ensure he could take one home.

An Apple-mad pupil at Birley Community College, he told The Star: “Everyone clapped when I was the first person to walk into the shop and chanted my name - so I was like ‘wow’.

“It was a very good day.

“I got to Meadowhall at 4pm on Thursday straight after school, I didn’t even go to sleep I was so excited.

“Straight after I arrived another person joined the queue and I thought ‘this is so lucky’.

“There were about 500 people behind us on Friday morning.

“I felt sorry for people because they thought if they arrived at 3am they’d get straight there but it didn’t work that way, you’ve got to be really sad.”

Hundreds of people were queuing at Meadowhall by 7am yesterday - an hour before the long-awaited device went on sale - echoing similar scenes around the world.

Car parks opened at 6.30am and long lines of shoppers stretched outside in the drizzle.

Some people had even brought their own camping chairs to make the wait a little more comfortable.

Elliott said: “The phone is great. My favourite feature is probably just how quick it is and big the screen is - there’s lots to pick from.”

Darren Pearce, Meadowhall centre director, said: “As the region’s top retail destination, we were very pleased to have been a part of the launch of such a momentous product.”
