Sheffield residents ‘lose’ gardens over new development

Residents living on a Sheffield estate claim they will not be able to use their gardens again because of a new mental health unit being built behind their homes.

People living around the site in Beighton, which used to be disused garages between Lilac Road, Daisy Walk and Sevenairs Road, are unhappy at the size of the development and its proximity to houses.

They claim they have lost their privacy because people who move into the Guinness Northern Counties building will see straight into their gardens and homes.

And they are also angry that a partition wall between the homes and development, which was removed five months ago, has not been replaced.

Connie Hewlett, of Daisy Walk, said: “It overlooks everybody. I have got a conservatory and it’s looking right into it and straight into the bedroom as well. We haven’t been able to use our gardens since they started building.”

Another resident, who lives on Lilac Road but did not wish to be named, said: “They shouldn’t have put such a big building in such a small space knowing residents live around it.

“They have taken away all our privacy. We are never going to be able to enjoy our gardens again.”

A Guinness Northern Counties spokesman said it had been working with residents to address concerns since pre-application stage.

He added: “This includes the redesign of the north-eastern end of the building to pull it further away from the gardens on Daisy Walk and Lilac Road, thus minimising issues of neighbours being overlooked.

“We also submitted designs for a new boundary wall when, following our inspection, the original wall bordering the gardens on Daisy Walk was declared unstable. Designs have now been approved by residents and works are scheduled to start next Wednesday, August 13.

“We continue to comply with the planning permission granted for this development which allowed a two or two-and-a-half storey building.”
