The Star is rightly proud of its role as community champion – promoting, supporting and leading from the front on behalf of great local causes.
But after another year of amazing campaigns, today we praise those who make the difference – YOU our readers.
Your efforts have made 2013 a year to remember and we salute you.
Readers helped to raise around £65,000, with a Star- backed charity concert and the return of The Star Walk, towards The Women Of Steel Appeal, to fund a £150,000 statue in honour of the women who kept the city’s steel mills working in two world wars.
Our front page masthead went green to show support for the NSPCC’s regional day of fundraising and our mission to improve child safety outside schools gathered momentum. Letters, phone calls and emails backing the It’s Your Child campaign continue to flood in.
Visitors to The Star shop donated change to help Mad Pram Man John Burkhill raise thousands more for Macmillan Cancer Support. They backed Sheffield’s Good Mourning Charity, which helps the bereaved.
Readers donated many of the 15,000-plus gifts for Mission Christmas – The Star- backed Hallam FM and Magic Am Cash For Kids appeal. Shoe boxes crammed with goodies, donated by readers, were delivered for the homeless to Sheffield Cathedral’s Archer Project.
We are promoting the 12 Days Of Christmas Help A Child Have A Chance campaign - helping make dreams come true for special youngsters.
Food, clothes, books, household items and toys were given to The Star-promoted Alan’s Appeal, for St Saviour’s Community Project in High Green, also helping needy families.
Launched by Maureen Greaves, in memory of her husband who was murdered on his way to play the organ in church on Christmas Eve last year, she said: “Alan would be very humbled by The Star’s appeal.”
And you backed our Help Build the Hospice campaign to support St Luke’s bid to improve its facilities so the hospice’s amazing work can continue to help grateful families.
