A complex of student flats and commercial uses is earmarked for a “rundown and neglected” site off Sharrowvale Road.
Plans cover land between the end of Dyson Place – a narrow road next to the Mediterranean restaurant – and Gordon Road. Much of the site is a yard used by garage Champion & Emmett, which has submitted the application for a four-storey block of 21 two bedroom flats and the conversion of two existing buildings, including an old mission hall, into three apartments above commercial premises. A paved area in front of the mission hall could be used for outdoor dining, it is suggested.
The council is being told that the housing is being designed for sharing couples, instead of large numbers of students, and that the scheme will bring a “rundown and neglected” part of Sharrow Vale back into use.
Public consultation has led to the number of parking spaces being increased from five to 18, but concerns are being raised by residents about the impact of the development.
