A FEATURE story broadcast on BBC Radio Sheffield today saying that Johnston Press, publishers of The Star, was considering turning the daily newspaper weekly is incorrect.

The BBC was reacting to a decision made by Johnston Press earlier this week about a change in publishing formats to five of the company’s daily newspaper titles, by turning them into weekly publications supported by daily online publishing.

The Halifax Courier, Northampton Chronicle & Echo, Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, Peterborough Evening Telegraph and Scarborough Evening News will move to a weekly print publishing schedule from the end of May, but there are no plans to change the publishing frequency of the The Star as a daily title.

Jeremy Clifford, Editor of The Star, said: “The Star has a long and proud tradition of serving its local communities and is well respected. During its 125-year history, there have been many changes to its format, including taking it from broadsheet to tabloid. Each of these decisions are influenced by what we think is right for the communities we operate in, the market and for the needs of the business.

“Our title is at the heart of the communities it serves and we are committed to reporting local news and continuing to serve as a powerful platform for readers’ views and concerns.

“We recognise the value of our loyal readership and will continue to serve it in whatever format is required. While we clearly need to be mindful of audience demands and trading conditions, we have no current plans to convert The Star to a weekly publication.”

In the past year, The Star has been significantly redesigned and relaunched with strong, market-leading supplements. That has been well received by existing readers and new readers and we are seeing that reflected in very positive sales figures - outperforming the national trend for the industry.

We have strong, well - respected columnists which attract a committed following .

From the Retro nostalgia and Weekender supplements on Saturdays, to GrassRoots on Friday, Final Score, our 16-page sports publication on Monday and our eight-page schools supplement Class Act on Tuesday, and Business pullouts, we consistently publish more news, entertainment and sporting information and comment than any other media organisation in the region every day.

The Star remains a strong voice in the community and plays an active and influential role in the Sheffield City Region and we intend that to continue, through our daily title and our website, mobile website, and social media sites.
