A further 15,000 drivers have been fined for speeding through a 50mph zone on the M1 while roadworks take place, police revealed today.

Derbyshire Police said 14,726 motorists have been caught going over the limit on the section of the motorway between junction 28 at Alfreton and junction 31 near Rotherham, a stretch for which the force is responsible.

The force revealed the figure to The Star just days after South Yorkshire Safety Cameras said it had caught almost 8,000 drivers on the stretch of road.

It means in total nearly 23,000 drivers - around 100 per day - have been caught out since a 50mph speed limit came into force along both carriageways on November 5 last year.

The lower limit has been in place to allow £54 million of barrier replacement works to happen along the motorway through South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

The work, expected to last until next summer, involves removal of the old steel barrier and hardening of the central reservation with a new concrete barrier being put in place.

Money from speeding fines on motorways goes to the Government.

Motorists who flouted the limit have been fined £100 or elected to attend speed awareness courses costing £93, while others will have had higher fines imposed at court.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said, as of June 13, some 14,726 people had been fined on the Derbyshire stretch of the motorway between junctions 28 and 30.

One motorist was caught going at an average speed of 103mph.

But Derbyshire Police did not have any information about the number of repeat offenders.

South Yorkshire Safety Cameras said last week their records showed dozens of motorists have been fined more than once.

A total of 23 people have two speeding offences to their name on the same stretch of road, with one person fined three times.

Four drivers were even fined four times each.
