The man who was instrumental in delivering the Tour de France in Yorkshire has been announced as the guest speaker for this year’s Sheffield City Region Business Awards.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, spearheaded the winning bid to bring Le Grand Départ to the county last year, which boosted the region’s economy by an estimated £130 million.

The passionate Yorkshireman is due to explain how he helped to galvanise the public and private sectors to work together to deliver the world’s most high-profile cycle race at the third annual business awards bash in Sheffield in July.

In his company biography, he is described as a “dynamic and motivational leader, with an excellent track record in brand building and managing complex businesses.”

It continues: “Since his appointment as chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire in October 2008 he has successfully raised the profile of Yorkshire at a regional, national and international level.

“Welcome to Yorkshire is widely regarded as the leading tourism agency in the UK, is hailed by the Government as an example to be followed and has won international awards for its marketing campaigns.”

Mr Verity was named Yorkshire’s Man of the Year, Director of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Directors Awards.

The City Region ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 2, at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield. The event takes the winners of the business awards run by the four chambers in Sheffield City Region and the Derbyshire Times newspaper.

They then go head-to-head to reveal who shall be ‘first among winners’. Each chamber will be involved in placing winners into categories and will supply a judge.

Guests are invited to arrive for a champagne reception from 6.45pm before the evening’s host comedian Kevin Connelly will take to the stage at just after 7.30pm.

James Mitchinson, editor of The Star, is due to make a welcome speech before dinner is served. Mr Verity is expected deliver his speech at about 9.45pm before the rest of the awards are given out.
